Adult Learners' Week 1-8 September 2016

Adult Learners' Week - 1-8 September
You are here because you are an 'adult learner' trying to improve your English.

In the AMEP program you learn with a teacher through a training organisation. You get assessed and can get a certificate. This is 'formal' learning.

But in fact most learning doesn't happen through formal training. Learning is like an iceberg. The smaller visible part above the surface reflects 'formal' learning and the larger hidden part below the surface reflects 'informal' learning.

We learn throughout life in different ways: at work, in the community, from family and friends. We learn by surfing the Net, watching TV, listening to the radio or reading a book.

On the 1st September we celebrate Adult Learners' Week in Australia and we would like you to join one of the activities that we have planned for you. The focus will be on informal learning.

  2. I totally agree that we learn faster from informal learning activities as mentioned above. I find it very useful talking with friends, watching movies and TV, listening to the radio etc. But remember, all the above materials have to be right with your level as well, otherwise they may not be very helpful.

Let me know if you have different ideas.
Thanks for sharing experience and knowledge.

    1. You're right, I think social and audiovisual learning takes place even when we are not self-conscious of it. YouTube, social media and the Internet have made this so much easier. I hope people still listen to the radio; it's great for listening skills specially that it doesn't give you any visual clues!

  4. I use Google for most of my informal learning. It's quick and convenient.

  6. This is a wonderful post as it brings up discussion about things that students can learn that is not just about learning English but makes them feel like they achieved something
