DL's Patchwork of Cultures |
Teachers Sonia and Barbara |
demonstrated how to wrap Vietnamese rice paper rolls which all agreed were delicious. Lisbeth and Johanna shared photos of their traditional dress, while Sonia lived up to her promise and wore a lovely orange 'Salwar Kamiz'.
In the slideshow students express their thoughts on how they keep their culture alive in Australia and how they feel about life in Australia.

'After I read Sonia's story I liked some words she said. These are my ideas. My life is like making a hand-made embroidery. I have a colourful and wonderful life but I have to work very hard at it. Like embroidery we have to do a little bit at a time and join it together, but sometimes, we have to re-do it. Sometimes I can't find the right colour thread so I stop what I'm doing and feel sad that I can't finish it. This is similar to my life and its ups and downs.'
Thank you to all the students and teachers for your contributions to the DL Patchwork of Cultures slideshow.
Wow! What a beautiful slideshow to read! I am learning more about different cultures from different country!
ReplyDeleteMaree, that is such a wonderful project for all the students. They all seemed to enjoy it and I myself feel so blessed to be part of the DL community, It's an encouragement to teachers and students who live in harmony in such a wonderful Australia oi oi oi

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely presentation! Thanks so much Maree for all your hard work in getting it together. And huge thanks to my lovely students, Jill, Kosar, and Sunila for their great efforts in telling us all more about what Harmony Day means to them and how they celebrate a diversity of special festivals! I learnt a lot! Well done!!
ReplyDeleteAmazing work Maree! I would like to congratulate all the students who contributed their stories. We are very lucky to be able to learn about these festivals.
ReplyDeleteThis slide show is both vibrant and informative. My students have loved reading them and identifying with their own cultural celebrations. What superb team work!
ReplyDeleteThis Tuesday and Wednesday the DL teachers will share some Hot Cross Buns. For Christians the cross on the sweet bun reminds them of Jesus. This Friday is called Good Friday and on this day Christians remember that Jesus died to forgive our sins. On Easter Sunday we share Easter eggs as we believe that Jesus rose again. Eggs are a symbol of this new life.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful presentation! Congratulations to everyone for their great contributions. A special thank you to my hard-working student Jane for her Christmas story.

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for such a wonderful cultures slideshow. It's a great way to break down cultural walls. All the different cultures that come together in Australia bring many things with them : different foods, ways of dressing, languages, customs and beliefs. Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live... Hien - the Vietnamese girl from AMEP distance learning ;).
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful and informative slideshow! Not only have I learnt about language with AMEP but also the special cultures from other countries. Thank you so much to friends and teachers who have put these together and shared with us.
ReplyDeleteAs a distance learning student, this is the first time I get chance to know other students who also take the course in other part of Australia. I can see the majority people are Muslims, who have a special festival called Ramadan. During the Ramadan, people fasting for 30 days and after that they celebrate Eid. This is the first time I have heard about Ramadan, even through I heard some people do similar things in Bali when I was travelling, but I don’t really understand why they did so. Harmony Day is a very interesting topic, I wish we could have more topic to learn in the future.
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful slideshow, reading about the different cultures made me realise that we all have our own culture we should hold onto. I have just been in Australi for about 8 months, but because I live in a small countrytown, I myself is the only Chinese I know here, so I actually missed celebrating Spring Festival, which I felt bad about.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the great, engaging content! Last week, while sharing the true message of Easter with my students, we also had the chance to explore this wonderful slideshow, and interacted with the information for quite a long time. As a language teacher I believe that respecting a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds plays a key role in successfully teaching English as a second language. I use that understanding to help my students feel welcomed, affirmed and valued, and this can lead to better interpersonal dialogues. Honouring diversity and fostering cross-cultural understanding can positively influence our students' learning journey. It can shape personal values, modes of interaction and aspirations.
ReplyDeleteIt's such a beautiful and fantastic paragraph which I have read. I am learning more about my culture, Ramadan and Eid, and other countries. It's such a blessing for everyone to know about each other's cultures I enjoyed it a lot, thanx for sharing
